NYC HOLIDAY NOSTALGIA SUBWAY RIDE - in Vintage Subway Cars
Yes, there may be some amount of "wet" out there this Sunday; the current forecast for"wet" is moving back in time, to later start, so odds look good of a dry time getting to the start (and even though we're all "sweet", it won't be enough to melt us down) but this fun destination and trip is well worth it. So dig out the ponchos and "wet riding bike gear", and mosey on down to Chambers Street. The wonderful NYC Transit Museum in Bklyn has re-upped it's Holiday Nostalgia Train Rides, using their vintage cars brought out from the Museum's carefully restored and maintained fleet https://www.nytransitmuseum.org/nostalgiarides/
We plan on boarding the first scheduled train at 10AM when it launches from Chambers Street Station on the #1 subway line. It then travels along the regular #1 route making all regular local stops to its terminus at City College/137th Street station. You are free to disembark anywhere, or ride to the end (or wherever we want to turn around), cross over to the other side, then catch the 11AM vintage train back to the start. We'll have a short bike ride through Chinatown and up the Hudson River Greenway to end at West 72 Street after that.
What a hoot our vintage subway ride will be! I remember subway cars as far back as the yellow plastic woven upholsted seats. I doubt we can bring bikes inside these vintage subway cars, so plan on locking up outside before our departure. And while theoretically one can board at any of the stops . . . IMHO best to board at the very start. This is going to be a popular surprise at all stations.
Since the Nostalgia train rides start at 10AM there might be hoopla and lines for the first inaugural one, so let's meet 930AM sharp and be ready to head underground to the Chambers St station before 10 to make sure we'll get on that first special train.
ALTERNATIVEIDEAS: If weather is not to your liking, or you're still tryptophane-weary from all the turkey - - (1) hop onto mass transit and get thyself to Chambers St "start" and then . . .just ride the vintage rails with us. You can flip over to a southbound train for free at several stops (the last one would be 96th/ Bway. (2) OR Bring your bike onto any subway connections getting you TO Chanbers St, then lock it upstairs on the street, and ride the vintage cars with us, and you're all ready to ride with us "on bike" after, OR just head home; (3) OR lock the bike at any stop on the #1 subway line which the vintage train will be passing, and disembark there.
MEET Bogardus Plaza, a little triangle park at the NW intersection of West B'way and Chambers Street, near the handicap access elevator. Grab a coffee or treat for our wait. If it's raining, we'll shelter at a logical place within earshot/eyesight (such as under construction scaffolding, awnings, or worst case, we will descend to the subway level) Lock up your bike or scooter on the street in advance.
BRING: Mask, whatever weather gear and bike stuff you need for the cycling part of the adventure afterward.
NEED: NYC Metro Card, or OMNY phone app, or train app to pay the regular subway fare (although there will be the usual ticket vending machines at the station, as well) .
