Let's . . . Greek Festival!
Recently during a NJ ride there were lots of interesting pop up placards 'bout some local Greek Festival. Being all of 1/4 Greek myself, it definitely caught my attention. After exploring the details and reviews, it looked like a lot fun, plus is close by the NJ side of the GWB (only one lap of Central Park away!). And the festival has been on for over 50 years. . so IMHO, it's stood the test of time, popularity, and authencity. So here goes!
We'll do a late afternoon ride across GWB and pedal the whole 6 mile outbound leg to Woodland Ave/Tenafly.
This annual Greek festival is on the grounds the Cathedral of St. John the Theologian, a Greek Orthodox cathedral in Tenafly. There are vendors, food, displays, purchasing, activites (music, wine tasting, cooking demo, etc.) all under either covered tents outdoors or inside the building arcade. No admission fee, but pls do bring cash in small bills (some vendors take credit cards). Food and wares are open full time, and there are several neat scheduled events: live music with one of the best Greek bands in NYC starts at 7; Greek herb/wellness demo at 7; church and iconography tour; etc. We'll leave time to wander, sup, sip, and enjoy some activities. And maybe tackle the age old question . . do we ride to eat . . or eat to ride? I dunno . . it's Greek to me! Probable departure from festival at about 8:30, after we eat/see/enjoy/listen to music/see/tour.
Check it out at the main event page, and surf the subdirectories there: www.tasteofgreecefestival.com
Do come hungry and ready to spend some time to enjoy varied treats the venue has to offer, including a very broad selection of authentic Greek eats/pastries (menu is on their event site), plus some great outdoor R&R and play time.
Ride limited to 8 riders + 2 leaders. We will ride as a group (better to be seen) so no PDS. Must be an advanced moderate level rider with good bike handling skills for Xing GWBridge shared ramps and pathway, for local NJ roads, and for small stretch of night riding on returning. Be sure to bring good lights for seeing and being seen on return 6 mile trip. Of course you can . . . gasp . .drive there; plenty of on site parking at the cathedral, or next door at JCC, and the festival runs Sept 17, 18, 19. Bedeck/bedazzle your bike with spoke and other lights as well, for the fun of it. And anyone have our classic club jersey in the Greek "key" design? I'm going to wear mine! [FYI, we're working with a local parish person to arrange suitable bike lockup or place to safely stash bikes.]
Please be on time at our designated ride meeting site, and ready to roll at the start. (There are restrooms just inside that entrance to the GWB bus terminal, so we can handle all of that in advance and watch each other's bikes.)
If you sign on but do need to drop, please remove yourself from the ride list asap.
MEET Ft Washington Ave entrance to GWB bus terminal.
LIGHTS Definitely needed for return ride.
BRING COVID mask, lock for bike, customary bike tools/tubes/patch kit/etc, carry capacity on-bike in case you want to bring home items, good lights.
OBSERVE All local and club COVID safety guidelines, including mask up within 6' even if outdoors, at stop/start of ride, and at collection points along the way (pays to be safe!).
RAIN DATE The fest is rain/shine, but we'd prefer NOT rain (nor hurricanes). In event of weather that's not fun or safe for cyclists . . our ride rain date is Saturday Sept 18, 4PM start.*TRANSLATION = "hey", "how goes it", "cheers/to health"
