Kensico Reservoir

Join me as I ride to the Kensico Reservoir. We will circle the entire Reservoir and definitely stop at the scenic Kensico Dam at mile 41.

I have not ridden some of this route, especially circling the Reservoir, so this will be a partial scout ride.  As such, please expect occasional wrong turns and stops to confirm proper routing.

Round-trip mileage from the start location in Long Island City is about 75 miles.  The start location will be provided by Friday June 11, 2021 to confirmed riders. 

Since this is a long ride, we will start early in order to return before sunset as I hate to ride at night. However, bring adequate lighting to be safe.

Although this ride will generally cruise at 12-15 mph in the open flats, there may be occasional gusts of up to 20 mph as conditions permit and in order to allow for an early return.  In other words, this ride is NOT for leisurely cyclists.

There are a couple of significant hills as we circle the Reservoir (13.3% grade at mile 32 and 9.2% grade at mile 36; for reference, the grade on the Queensboro Bridge is 5.3%). Hills do not appear to be significant elsewhere but there will be a few.  Total elevation gain is about 3,500 feet.

Additionally, we will utilize a lot of paved trail, including the Harlem River Driveway in the Bronx, the newly paved Old Putnam Trail in Van Cortlandt Park, the southern portion of the South County Trailway, the Bronx River Pathway in both directions (much more on the return since we take it from Kensico Dam Plaza back to Yonkers), and the High Bridge path in the Bronx.

NOTE: Although we utilize much trail, riders should be comfortable riding alongside traffic on major roads and two-lane highways with limited shoulders.

Lunch will be at Kensico Kitchen Deli about mile 42.  Please bring snacks and hydration to tide you over until then.

Please bring the usual bike repair equipment (e.g. spare tubes, multi-tool, air pump, etc.)

Don't forget your Metro-North bike pass and NYC subway card in case you want/need to bail out early.

Please be familiar and comply with current 5BBC riding guidelines. Masks are required. Bring hand sanitizer. Maintain 10-15 feet between riders when cycling and 6 feet when stationary.  

IMPORTANT REQUIREMENTS: You must register online for the ride.  Please 'unregister' if you can not make the ride so that waitlisted folks can move up and take the slot.
