Join us as we celebrate Juneteenth. We travel to the culture enriched boro of Manhattan . We will make our way to the tippy top of Manhattan before making our way down to the far reaches of the gritty lower East Side. Lunch will be in Upper Manhattan where you will have your choice of different cuisines. ( Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we can enjoy eating in Ring Garden )
On June 19, 1865, the announcement was made that tens of thousands of African-Americans in Texas had been emancipated, closing the door on one of the last chapters of slavery in the U.S.
Today, June 19, is celebrated as “Juneteenth,” in honor of one of the final acts of emancipation of slaves in the U.S.
This year’s celebration is taking on special meaning as efforts are underway to make the day a federal holiday.
We will be making stops at Dykman Farm , Mother Zion Church , The famous Apollo theatre , Mintons Jazz club , before making our way to the East Village where we will visit Jean- Michel Basqauit 's studio ,where he created art dedicated to the struggles and his experiences in the black community. A beautiful , creative artist taken from this world far too soon. There will be some points made at each site and of course a photo or two , but we will be moving a bit quickly to ensure we see all the sights This will be MODERATE RIDE in the front and the back will accomodate a Happy Face pace BUT PLEASE BE ABLE TO KEEP NO LESS THAN 10MPH IN THE BACK. PLEASE ALSO BE COMFORTABLE RIDING ON BUSY STREETS , THERE ARE A FEW
All club rules apply and the start location will be emailed to the registrants . Location will be in the vacinity of Downtown Manhattan .
Please bring all the usual bike stuff , LIGHTS , SPARE TUBE , HYDRATION , HELMET , MASK AND SANITIZER.. ALSO PLEASE DRESS FOR THE SEASON
