Mastic Moriches and Manorville - Calverton Variation
We scouted a variation of this ride recently and it was absoultely wonderful, a fun, scenic ride with lots of long stretches of riding and a few special stops along the way. In other words this is a ride not to be missed. It's a mostly fairly flat 50ish mile ride with about 1,000 feet of elevation gain and no grade above 5% . We have done variations of this ride and each variation has proven enjoyable and popular with some nice scenic sections and some excellent extended riding sections. This variation adds some new areas up by Calverton, including lunch on the Peconic River at the Peconic River Herb Farm and a ride mostly by woods on part of the bike path on the old Grumman property (and a stop by the Grumman Memorial Park). And on the way out you can get a sweet treat at the always amazing Nettie's.
The ride is accessible by automobile or LIRR. Also, the ride is an advanced moderate ride with no real bailouts, so please be able to ride at least 14mph on the flats.
Normally, we would stop and pick up lunch, but under the current circumstances, there will be no lunch pick up. We will have a brief stop about 15 miles in at Nettie's if you want a sweet treat. If you have not been there before, Nettie's is an amazing bakery and a special compound. Later in teh ride as noted we will stop for lunch by the Peconic. So please bring your lunch, snacks and sufficient hydration. Most importantly bring an upbeat inquisitive attitude ready to explore new and unknown areas.
IMPORTANT REQUIREMENTS: A reminder that you must register for the ride and that the exact start location will be forwarded to the registered riders. Please 'unregister' if you can not make the ride so waited list folks can move up and take the slot. All riders should come equipped with a mask, hand sanitizer/wipes, a spare tube, sunscreen, snacks and a bike in good condition, as well as being familiar with the current criteria for riding with the Club.
