Rally and Memorial for Dave Schlichting
It is a year since we tragically lost Dave Schlichting to a hit and run as he was riding on the shoulder of the LIE Service Road. Dave was a super Captain for Bike New York, a long time 5BBC leader, active in other bike clubs and the bike community and an all around amazing, generous individual who touched and brightened the lives of so many. On Sunday April 5th, led and coordinated by Bike New York, there will be a rally and memorial for Dave, first at the sight of the hit and run on the LIE Service Road and then over at the offices of the Nassau County District Attorney, who have been dragging their feet and not acting, even though they have the individual who hit Dave.
In order to make it easier for those taking the subway, we will meet at 9:00 AM sharp at Cunningham Park and take an indirect route out to the rally and memorial, which will start at 10:30. If you can't make it to Cunningham Park, you are encouraged to go directly to the rally (one can take the LIRR to Great Neck and head over from there). After the memorial by the LIE, we will cycle over to the Nassau County DA to rally and encourage them to act. We expect press coverage. After the rally, we will head back to Cunningham Park. We are hopeful that other bike clubs and cycling organizations will also be participating in the event. The event is still fluid with further details to be finalized, so be sure to check back for additional information as it is released. For now save the date and we hope to have a very large turnout to honor Dave and to make a public statement.
