Share the joy of bicycling
Become a 5BBC Leader - we are working on a new model for leader development. Our 2020 Pilot was held on October 25th and a great success.
if you'd like to learn more about our Pilot Program - which we ran in 2019 for the first time with great success and have had a second in 2020, e-mail email@example.com to see when we might run another intake.
Hopefully once the pandemic ends we can resume our historical approach to training leaders described below.
Do you enjoy interacting with people, exploring and creating new bike routes, promoting bicycling or do you want a great way to give back to the Club and the bicycling community? Or maybe you just want to see more 5BBC rides. You don't have to be a strong rider or a great mechanic. Mostly you just need the desire and we teach you what you need to know.
The 5BBC Leadership Course will teach you how to organize and run both day and weekend trips.
You will learn:
- map reading
- ride planning
- cycling safety
- group dynamics
- developing your leadership style
- many other skills that go into making yourself a leader
The course, taught by experienced 5BBC leaders, combines classroom instruction with practical riding experience. You do not have to be a strong or fast rider or bicycle repair guru to take the course. That is not what the course is about – it is about leadership. It is strongly recommended that you be able to ride for the better part of a day and be comfortable riding with a group. If you have not ridden with us before, you should definitely go on several 5BBC rides to become familiar with how typical Club rides take place. (If you are not a member of the 5BBC and wish to take the class, you must become a member.)
The Leadership class consists of 4 evening indoor classes, 3 days trips, and a weekend trip. To become a leader you have to attend 3 of 4 classes, 2 of the 3 rides, and the weekend. The dates this year are:
indoor classes - 7/2,9,23,30 Tuesdays from 6PM-9PM
rides - 7/14,21,28 Sundays from approximately 9AM-4:30PM
weekend - 8/9-11 Friday noon till Sunday 6PM via van from either the Village or LIC.
The initial cost is $15 and is due by June 15,2019. It will be used to cover your share of the class costs (the remainder will be covered by the Club) and it will insure that a place in the class is reserved for you. Both our classroom space in Manhattan and our lodging space in Columbia are limited and signups will be honored on a first come/first admitted basis. The cost of the weekend trip is $50.00 (this includes transportation for you and your bike to Columbia County, two nights lodging, two breakfasts, two trail lunches and one dinner) and is payable by the second class.
