It seems like this winter has been endless, with minimal opportunities for enjoyable riding.  But despite the bleak current forecasts, spring is coming and so is the 5BBC Spring Training Series.  Starting the first weekend in March, we will be listing a diverse offering of fun rides to help put the winter doldrums behind us and get us in shape for the season.  This year in addition to old favorites, we will be offering some new training rides including a series in the Hudson Valley from Adam.

The spring training series is the perfect vehicle to help train for century (regular or metric) events, the Five Borough Bicycle Tour or just to participate in great rides with fun groups.  We will have various mileage and speed options - be sure to only join a ride appropriate for your level.  Additionally, we will still offer our other rides (can anyone say Empanada Ride), some of which can double as training rides for shorter events like the 5BBT.  Ride listings should be appearing shortly.  Check back regularly for updates and new listings. If you have any questions, or suggestions email

Dear Five Borough Bicycle Club: The coming year has brought on a change with how we do our rides. Our rides are now limited to members only, although first time participants may also ride with the club. This change was brought on by the new insurance policy, but is really a matter of fairness to our membership.

We are a member supported club. By that, the majority of our income for the year comes from your dues. These dues allow us to pay for insurance, provide upkeep and maintenance of the web site, train our leaders, and pay for incidental expenses as they arise. In short – your dues keep our club functioning.

We feel that the $25 annual membership is one of the best entertainment values in town. For less than 50 cents per week, you can ride virtually every weekend day. You get great exercise. You visit areas of the city and beyond that you never knew about. You sample some of the great foods that this city is known for. And of course, you do it with the friendliest group of cyclists around.

Our new membership policy resulted in the need for a new Waiver and Sign In Form. This form will be used on all forthcoming rides done by the 5BBC. The waiver provides what you acknowledge before the ride – and limits the liability to the Club in the unlikely event that you are injured. Paragraph “C” encompases our new members only ride policy. Before you take your next ride with the club – why not look it over.

Waiver, Affirmation and Release of Liability:

I, a participant on a group ride of the Five Borough Bicycle Club “(5BBC”) or some other 5BBC related activity, affirmatively state, agree and attest as follows:

A) I am eighteen (18) years of age or older;

B) I am competent to bicycle on public roads in traffic, and recognize and acknowledge the inherent hazards and dangers of riding in public, and acknowledge that I may be riding on roads that may have specific hazards that may include but are not limited to, wet or slippery conditions, potholes or other uneven difficult surfaces, the presence of traffic, or the like. I accept those hazards and agree to engage in all activity in a safe and prudent manner and agree that if at any time I believe the conditions not to be safe that I will cease my participation.

C) I am a member of the 5BBC, or that this is my first time riding with the 5BBC. I acknowledge that 5BBC rides are for its members, and that my participation in such ride requires me to be a member unless this is my first time riding with the 5BBC;

D) I have checked the bicycle and equipment I will use, and it is in proper working order and meets the legal requirements for operation on the streets;

E) I will wear a CPSC or Snell approved helmet while riding;

F) I am aware of and acknowledge 5BBC’s recommendation that I consult with a physician regarding the advisability of my participation in 5BBC activities;

G) I am aware and acknowledge that I may be photographed during 5BBC activities, and agree to allow my photo, video or film likeness to be used by the 5BBC and its leaders for any legitimate purposes.

I, assume and accept the risks related to my participation in this activity and I further discharge and release the 5BBC, their respective ride leaders, their boards, and all sponsoring or related organizations, including governmental agencies, if, any, and all of the prior organizations respective agents, boards, employers and representatives from any and all liability arising out of or connected in any way with my participation in this activity and/or event, whether or not caused by the negligence of any of the above parties. I further acknowledge that first aid, medical or other services rendered to me by, or at the recommendation of any of the parties mentioned above is not an admission of liability.

What this means to you:

If you are already a dues paying member in good standing, the new policy will have little effect. Much of the legalese was already in the previous waiver that you already signed before each ride.  If you have yet to renew your membership for the coming year - please do so and continue to ride with us.

If you are a first time guest of the club – WELCOME ! We love to welcome new riders and hope that you enjoy your “test ride” and will join the 5BBC.

If you are an individual who is not a member, yet has ridden with the 5BBC before – you are not permitted on the ride. After one test ride – you must become a member.

We trust that you understand the reasoning behind these changes. Of course, if you have yet to pay your annual dues, please do so immediately so as to enable you to continue to ride with us. Change is never easy, but we feel that new policy is necessary for the club.

See you on the road

Attention all 5BBC leaders and members who will need to drive a 15-passenger van for the Club.

The Club is offering a two-part van certification process consisting of a mini-course with a written test and a “road test.” The mini-course and written exam will be given online through a national certification company and the “road test” through the Club’s Leadership Coordinators. During January and almost all of February you can take the mini-course and written exam at any time. The $25 fee for the course will be reimbursed to you by the Club once you have completed both the written and “road test” parts of the course. For instructions on how to sign up for the course,  please contact Co-Leadership Coordinator Manny Sanudo at or call at 718-217-0045.

The “road test” part of the exam will be given on Saturday February 28, 2015 at a designated Manhattan location.

Dear 5BBC Members,

We have a new insurance policy through the League of American Cyclists.

The League's insurance program is designed to cover cycling clubs all over the country - and all clubs receive the same rates and the same type of policy. The policy premium is based upon the number of members that are in the club. The General Liability Policy is provided through Axis Insurance. The Excess Medical Policy is provided through Mutual of Omaha.

Who is Covered:

  • The insurance covers not only all 5BBC rides, but also covers any meetings and bike education courses held by the 5BBC.
  • The insurance covers the leaders and the 5BBC in the event that any rider gets injured and sues the club and/or its leaders.
  • Individual Leaders and the Five Borough Bicycle Club are always covered, no matter the membership status of the injured rider. The limits of this coverage are $1,000,000 per occurrence with a $3,000,000 aggregate per club.
  • Members also receive excess accident medical care, after their own health insurance. Under the terms of the policy. This limited health care is also available to first time riders.

Who is NOT Covered:

  • If you are riding the second ride with the club, and you are not a member - you are not covered under the excess medical portion of the Club's policy.

What this means to You:

If you are a member of the 5BBC, or a first time guest, you are covered in the event of an accident. The Mutual of Omaha policy provides excess medical care up to $10,000, with a $500 deductible. It also pays $5,000 for accidental death or dismemberment. The policy also covers dental expenses to natural sound teeth, outpatient physical therapy, and prescription drugs. The above medical coverage is part of the benefits that you receive as a member of the 5BBC.

If you are a leader, know that you will be defended [a lawyer will represent you for free] and you will be indemnified [any money verdict or settlement will come from the Club's insurance policy] up to $1,000,000 per occurrence. Just to put you at ease, the club has only been sued once over the past 30 years, and that case was thrown out of court.

In conjunction with the requirements of the new insurance coverage, the Club has instituted a revised policy that non-members are allowed one test ride with the Club, and thereafter must become members to continue to ride with the Club.

We hope that all riders will become members of the club, after the initial test ride. However, we do not expect ride leaders to conduct a roll call and reject non-members from a ride. For this reason, we will be implementing a new Waiver and Sign In sheets that MUST be utilized by all leaders and filled out by all riders.

I hope that this explains some of the questions that I know a lot of our leaders and members have with regard to the new policy. Leaders, please look for an upcoming announcement regarding a Leadership Meeting, at which time we will be happy to answer your questions. Also, any time you have a question of me or the board, feel free to ask it via as our communications team circulates the question of memership to the board in a timely fashion.
