Not your traditional weekend trip: camp on the East End & see where the deer & buffalo roam
Interested in joining us for a weekend of riding out on the East End of Long Island where the deer & buffalo roam? No? Seriously, we will see buffalo and deer if you care to wake up at 5 am or possibly at dusk. We will stop at the infamous Briermere Farm for pie and fruit. This is not your traditional weekend trip. This is more like two "Day" rides with tent camping and a cookout (or restaurant, if we are too tired or too hot to cook). There will be options to ride a shorter distance and go to the campground on your own if you decide to do the short ride. We will do 40 miles/Saturday & about 45/Sunday.
We will be meeting in Penn Station at 9:15AM. We will take the 9:45 train to Easthampton, set up Camp, grab a snack, then ride out on the South Fork to Montauk. Sunday we will take the ferry across to Shelter Island riding across that wonderful Island, taking the north ferry to Greenport and then heading to Riverhead - lots of great riding over the two days. Once on the East End, we may BBQ and we'll camp overnight.
Must have a Bike Permit for MNR/LIRR, $5. Bike permits for sale at the ticket window at GCT and are reusable. This year, your trainfare is included in your fee.
This is a self contained ride and each rider is responsible for their own costs and to bring their the required items including spare tubes, bike tools, food and other items, clothes and camping gear. We will likely do an optional group dinner. Bring lights as well. Since we will be arriving in Easthampton it is likely we are riding late the first day. The Leaders are bringing extra tent stakes, a mallet, bug repellent, sunblock, and cable locks; you may lighten your load and leave those items at home. Other items you may wish to bring are: 2 full drink containers or a hydration backpack, bike gloves, lightweight rain jacket, swimsuit, quick-dry towel, flip-flops, baby wipes, toothbrush, hand sanitizer, sunglasses, any medications you require, including allergy medicine, and an extra pair of bike shorts & shirt. Bring a backup power supply to recharge your phone & lights.
The following are estimates of some of the costs:
- Weekend Trip fee, $75; this includes your trainfare!
- lunch on Sunday: Estimated costs: about $20, depending where we eat and your dietary requests. There are various options.
There are train stations within 10 miles of everywhere we travel. Bring a credit card and at least $100 cash for cab fare.
We are planning to do this ride unless there is a strong chance of heavy rain forecast in the AM/PM. Please bring rain gear and waterproof your bike bags & tent. Please email in advance if you need to share a tent or other camping gear; we will try to accommodate you.
