This is an even better trip to Philly than our first one (and our current photo above, by the way, is of the historic and now empty Eastern State Penitentiary, which housed Al Capone and such, plus it's the site of Philly's annual Phun Bastille Day Festival and celebrations, which we'll be partaking of!).

Don't miss the new Phun and the fabulous bon marche pricing for the City of Brotherly Love, plus Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite at Bastille Day festivities.

NOTE: Sign up ASAP as we're keeping the group size small (max of 12), due to limited lodging availability at this price. We will be making an early go-no go decision so please do not hesitate! Let us know if you plan to join.

This trip is a great way to "do Philly".  We'll have urban and ethnic area riding, neat bike and rail trails, plus parks, river valleys, art, and iconic settings. Also visits to the new Museum of the American Revolution (includes George Washington's tent); the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall; the eerie Eastern State Penitentiary (Al Capone's deluxe private room), plus their big Bastille Day festival and spoof performance (and it will literally rain Tastycakes when Marie Antoinette performs her famous line).

A modern hostel in a downtown historic area houses us in our own dorm rooms using bunk beds and shared showers/rest rooms. Depending on the mix of participants, possible coed occupancy. More details below about things you should know when choosing to participate on this trip

This trip runs rain or shine, as there are plenty of things to enjoy indoors and only short periods where we would have to ride in the rain - we can get a teensy wet if needed.

Friday - Leave early (7 am) from NY Penn Station on NJ Transit; transfer at Trenton to NJT Light Rail's River Line to Camden, NJ. With the Philly skyline beckoning we'll bike triumphantly across the Ben Franklin Bridge, over the Delaware River, along the very short distance to our hostel. We'll drop our luggage there and then, guided by your leaders, bike tour Philly using a cue sheeted route. We'll start with an indoor tour of the Museum of the American Revolution, then target the Chestnut and Society HIll areas, Elspeth Alley, the Magic (Mosaic) Garden area, South Street, the Italian Market (any Rocky successors jogging by?), Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, etc. Later on, dinner will be at a fun place (maybe even Philly Cheese Steaks). Mileage won't be huge (15ish) but the experience and visuals will be wonderful.

Saturday - After a light breakfast at the hostel we'll enjoy some continuous bike touring/pedaling on a neat ride of about 35ish miles. We head west past some noted Philly sites, including Rocky's steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, maybe the original LOVE sculpture and the Barnes Museum, and the bike trail along the Schuylkill River's famed Boathouse Row. We return via Fairmount Park (one of the largest metropolitan parks in the country). A fun Bastille Day festival and a spoof performance will entertain us at Eastern States Penitentiary, which we can also tour. Our host's wine/cheese party awaits us that evening, and we'll dine out at an interesting spot.

Sunday - After an early breakfast we go "wheels up" on our bikes and take off. We'll bike back to Trenton (for the train to NYC), touring through some phun areas (Fishtown, Graffiti Pier), maybe Pennypack Park, and then follow the Delaware River. Total biking 40ish miles. ETA NYC 7-8 PM. There are train bail-outs along our cycling route, and you can optionally return to NYC from Philly via train lines.

Trip price (a bargain) includes: 2 nights dorm room lodging (probably gender-mixed) in a clean, well appointed, modern hostel (and will involve bunk beds); 2 simple breakfasts (hot oatmeal, fruit, bun, coffee/tea); 2 experienced leaders guiding each day with planned, cue sheeted rides and visits to points of interest; secure, indoor, overnight bike storage. Registered participants will be provided with a detailed trip outline, their own routing and cue sheets to print/bring, and a suggested "to bring" list. See below for some notes to help you decide this trip is for you.

Not included in trip price (out-of-pocket expenses during the trip): Each day's dinner, lunch, snacks, beverages; train tickets NYC to Trenton, NJ, & Trenton to Camden, NJ; return train Trenton to NYC; admission to museums, events, points of interest, or any alternate or rainy-day entertainment. Depending on any available discounts (senior, teacher/student, etc.) we estimate you should budget $80-125 to spend during the trip.

Additional notes:
1) Registered participants will get a detailed trip overview and packing list, though questions are welcome prior to registering.
2) You will have to carry your gear safely, in a stable way on your body and/or bike, and possibly in the rain, to and from train stations, ranging in distance from about 3 miles on Friday to as far as 40 miles on Sunday (we can help with packing/carrying suggestions).
3) Hostel lodging is your own bed (a top or bottom bunk) in a gender-mixed dorm room (for our group only), with shared (but gender separate) showers/lavatories; fresh bedding & towels available each day.
4) You need to be equipped for:  the usual day-ride bike necessities to keep you safe & comfortable, and to fix flats; locking your bike securely on the street while visiting points of interest; carrying all your gear on-bike (see #2); riding in the rain with your gear for a short distance; proper front & rear lights (and bright/reflective clothing) for riding in dark/low-light conditions; comfortable shoes and clothing for on-bike/off-bike exploring; comfortable evening and morning dorm life shared with other travelers.
