New London + CT Shore +Lob-stah
Yay - - Connecticut shoreline, plus seafaring and colonial New London, all at a fabulous price. Sign up here!
Here we come, for 3 fun days of touring, with 2 nights' accommodations.
Public rail lines jump us well beyond our normal cycling reach, so let's go play and explore the new turf. Besides neat cultural, historic, and visual delights, there's lots of colonial history here, as well . . . including where turncoat Benedict Arnold led British troops to overrun and ransack the settlements and town.
This trip works great even if the "R" word (as in . . ."rain") happens, as there's plenty to do around New London, and we can shorten any day's bike riding to a manageable amount (yes, we're sweet, but won't melt with a little summer rain).
Reminder that you'll be purchasing your own train tix before several of these train segments, and some via exact cash on board. . . so when the expanded trip kit is distributed to confirmed participants, we'll be clear in providing details.
Friday - Early train departure on MetroNorth GCT to Stamford, where make and easy swap to board the direct train to New London area. Old Saybrook on the coast is where we'll start cycling along the shoreline to reach maritime New London. We'll explore town and the harbor, with sights such as Fort Trumbull, Nathan Hale's Schoolhouse, Eugene O'Neill's cottage. Our day caps off with a shore dinner at a locals' favorite lobster pound, before heading to our private rooms at a local college. About 30 miles cycling planned (which can be shortened in event of "R" to 5 miles by changing trains in Old Saybrook to the next departure going all the way to New London).
Saturday - A bountiful buffet breakfast at our lodgings will fortify us for a fun loop ride starting out easterly. Our route may take us past Mystic (Pizza, anyone?), the famed Mystic Seaport, then into Westerly Rhode Island (our first club ride in Rhode Island!), and back via seafaring Stonington, and Groton's submarine history and industry. We'll dine at a local spot (pssst - - there are 2 more neat lobster pounds in Noank, CT before we cross back over the Thames River). About 40 miles cycling (5 miles around town to fun places if "R" happens).
Sunday - Another hearty buffet breakfast, then "wheels up" as we explore more of Connecticut and cycle back to New Haven for the train to NYC. Along the way we can visit Gillette Castle, and will float across the Connecticut River on the quaint Hadlyme Ferry, and have lots of other nice turf. About 60 miles cycling (4 miles only back to the afternoon train from New London if the "R" thing happens).
Trip Includes - 2 nights individual individually locked dorm room lodging with linens/towel (shared bathrooms); 2 hearty buffet breakfasts; secure indoor bike storage in your room; and 2 experienced leaders guiding the 3 days cycle touring with planned, cue sheeted rides and visits to points of interest. Registered participants will be provided with a detailed trip outline, data files of the routing & cue sheets to print/bring; details on specific trains to take and ticket pricing/buying, and suggested packing list (key words being "keep it light" and "multiple usages of what you tote").
Not Included - Rail transit NYC-Old Saybrook; New Haven to NYC; each day's lunch/dinner/snacks; optional admissions to museums or points of interest. Depending on available discounts (senior, teacher/student, etc.), and if "R" causes us to cut back on cycling and adventure more indoors and to take the train for longer distances, we estimate you should budget $100-140.
Bring - Government issued I.D. that includes proof of age; any teacher/student affinity I.D.; locking ability to secure bikes and luggage when out/about or visiting a site, bungee cord for train, hydration & snack carrying ability, bike kit for tires/pump, any special tools you might need, reading material for train ride).
Hope to see you on this wonderful ride - Sign up here!
