Sandy Hook 21th Anniversary Ride

Saturday, June 15, 2019 - 08:00

I have led this 5BBC ride since 1998, inspired after recovering from a broken thumb on the then-5BBC Montauk Century. Sandy Hook was a former military installation, now a National Recreation Area, a Federal Park on the north tip of the famed Jersey Shore. We’ll leave on the 8:15AM Pier 11 Seastreak ferry. It will be worth your while. Once on the Hook, the starting miles will be on a nice bike path. We’ll go beyond the park to the town of Sea Bright, then through nice parts of Middletown, climbing to Mt. Mitchill Lookout. We will descend to the town of Atlantic Highlands. From there, we’ll go on the Popamora semi dirt section of the Henry Hudson Trail to Highlands. Lunch will be at a local restaurant. Afterwards we’ll climb back to Sandy Hook via the Highlands Bridge. Our remaining time will be at the Hook’s North Beach, for a swim or just hanging out. We’ll take the return ferry to New York City. The return times are 3:45PM, 5:45PM and 7:45PM. Bring a lock, $ for food, bungee cord to secure bike to ferry, full water bottle(s), sunscreen, sunglasses and swim gear. Be prepared for hills, some busy traffic and some off road cycling. Seastreak round trip fare is $35, which includes bike access (you need to ask for this.) However, there’s no charge for folding bikes, Alfredo will ride one himself. Please get to the Pier 11 start early, as the lines fill up for this popular summer cruise, for cyclists and non-cycling beach lovers alike. Photo is from June 2005 - although a new sign replaced this one, some things haven’t changed...
