Ramblersville on Ground Hogs Day

A Winter Tradition

10:00am

32 miles / Moderate / Starting at Grand Army Plaza, Prospect Park

It's Groundhog's Day - and we will all find out how many more weeks left in winter.  One thing is certain - the days are short and the weather is cold. Which can only mean that it is time for our annual cold weather ramble to Ramblersville.   In what has become a Winter Tradition, we head to the wilds of Queens and spend some quality time at a great hobo beach on Jamaica Bay.  One of the most isolated neighborhoods in New York City, Ramblersville is a one block wide strip of land between Old Howard Beach and JFK.  Houses are built on stilts in this marshy spit of land.  We cross one of the... more

9:00am

20-30-40-50-60 miles / Happy Face / Starting at Columbus Circle

How could we not have a ride from Columbus Circle on Columbus Day? But where to go?

New Rochelle has some amazing history - too vast to cover in one ride.

I have stumbled upon a treasure trove of history and will share it with you on this and future rides I plan to lead that explore this great town (where I happen to live these days) - one of the original "suburbs". So original, in fact, that while Carl Reiner lived here writing and performing on Sid Caesar's show of shows in the 50's, it became the prototype for The Dick Van Dyke show, which Carl wrote, and where Rob and... more

On the Trail of the Lenapes: Freehold

9:00am

35 miles / Moderate / Starting at Penn Station

The first in a series of early spring Get Out of Towners. We'll be doing an easy 35-miler (more or less) from Princeton Junction to Aberdeen-Matawan, via Freehold, the favored crossroads of the long-gone Lenapes and the site where revolutionary hero Molly Pitcher she-manned a cannon after her husband was gunned down at nearby Monmouth Battlefield. Much of the ride from Freehold to Matawan is on the Henry Hudson Rail Trail, so we'll see lots of greenery and carless countryside. Some of the sights along the way include: the West Haven Lighthouse, a Victorian carousel, a defunct trolley rail trail... more
