Another Weekday Scout - Smith Point

So far the weekday rides have been a success with some of them just rides and some of them scouts or partial scouts.  This one is a partial scout for the TWA Flight 800 Memorial ride scheduled for April 28th.  The weather for Friday looks good.  Lots of this ride is brand new and hence a true scout as we try to to determine the scenic value of the ride, the suitability of roads, potential rest rooms and food stops. Come join the The Quick Spring Training Series!

Ride #2 is one way to Port Jefferson, Long Island.  We meet in the large parking lot at Cunningham Park, Union Turnpike & 196 Place, Queens.  55 miles.  Meet at 9:00 AM and depart at 9:07 AM..  Riders must be able to maintain 17 MPH on flat roads.  We may ride some segments in the low 20s, but will compress if necessary.

This is a one way ride through the rolling hills of the North Fork, ending at the Port Jefferson LIRR Station. Short break in Syosset before heading out through Kings Park, Smithtown, St James and Stony... more

A Spring Training Fun Ride

The 5BBC spring training series continues with a ride to the hamlet of Hartsdale located in Westchester County between the better-known municipalities of Scarsdale and White Plains. We meet at Dinosaur Playground, Riverside Drive at 97th Street. Photo op at the High Bridge. Lunch is at the reasonably priced and descriptively named Bagels deli in Hartsdale. Another photo op at the Scarsdale waterfall. Return via the pretty Bronx River Greenway also known for low bridges, so when you hear the leader yell "duck!" it's not about waterfowl.

Let's ride along the Brooklyn waterfront to our favorite Pizza place - Totonno's.  

This is a great ride for new members and those of you who wish to begin your training for the 5BBT.

After lunch we meander through Sheepshead Bay and Manhattan Beach before heading back.

Bring a lock and money for lunch.

Join us on scenic ride through the Palisades Interstate Park as we travel to the Pier on the Hudson in Piermont, followed by Hook Mountain State Park in Nyack. There will be time to eat in Piermont or Nyack, as well as visit Piermont Bicycle.

Palisades Interstate Park is very hilly. Road bikes are strongly suggested.

Helmets are always required. Gloves are strongly suggested, along with two spares, pump or CO2, snacks, & a full water bottle.

We don't expect to ride north above 17mph on flats, but we may return at that pace. We will likely meander through Palisades... more

This is a new ride (second offering) and a ride not to be missed.  We meet in the large main parking lot at the Ronkonkoma LIRR on the south side, near the ticket machines.  We have listed a 10:30 start. There is a LIRR train that is scheduled to arrive at 10:35 from the City.   

The ride makes its way from Ronkonkoma north by Stony Brook, to the historic Setaukic area and up around scenic Strong’s Neck. From there we head over and then up to Old Field Lighthouse and then down to some real hills by Head of the Harbor and then south before making our way back to the start.

Get your fill of Westchester's Croton Reservoir with three lake crossings: the Putnam Trail Railroad Bridge, the Old Croton Dam (Gate House) Bridge, and the New Croton Dam. Ride also features the car-free Putnam Trail, gorgeous views from a lake shore road, and a visit to the best ice cream north of the Croton River. Cycle the back roads of Nassau County as we visit one of the most scenic spots on Long Island's North Shore. The outbound route takes us through Roslyn and Great Neck, where we will stop to honor the memory of David Schlicting,  while the inbound through Port Washington. Van Cortland Park to Peekskill

Come Join us on a nice, 50 mile ride up to the scenic town of Peekskill, NY.  We will be starting at the Van Cortland House, in Van Cortland Park at 10:00AM, heading out north on the "South and North County Trails" until we hit Yorktown, NY, at mile 32, where we will stop for lunch at the Yorktown Coach Diner.From there, we will be taking some nice scenic roads, following the shore of the New Croton Reservoir. Finally, our ride will take us through the Blue Mountain reservation, on yet more wonderful backwoods roads, until we make it to the riverfront town of Peekskill. Here we can  end... more

Cherry Blossom Ride #1 2019

Great ride to see the blossoms and a few other surprises along the way!

This is the annual Cherry Blossom ride, initiated in the 1970s by Irv Weisman, to enjoy the increasing number of blossoms in Branch Brook Park, Newark and Belleville, NJ.  This park has more cherry trees than in Washington, DC and they add more every year.  Bring your camera.

We will enjoy the blossoms for a while then head off for Bloomfield or Montclair, eating in a diner. 

Meet at the bottom of the escalators at the World Trade Center PATH station at the ticket machines. (Lower level of the Occulus)

GWB to Rockland Lake Loop

A nice ride up to a picturesque lake, with a lunch stop in Nyack on the way back.

50 miles / Advanced Moderate / Starting at George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal

This is a 50 mile ride starting at the GWB, and heading up north to Rockland Lake State Park. On the way back, we will be stopping in Nyack, where there are about a dozen places to choose from for lunch. We will be keeping a 15-16mph average on the flats, and regrouping on top of the hills. There is around 2200 feet of climbing, spread out over the ride. If you have never ridden up in this area, you will love it!

Picking up some mileage and hills, your  Quick Spring Training Series contines to Rockland Lake!

Ride #4 meets at the George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal is and up and back around Rockland Lake State Park.  We meet just outside the Bus Terminal Entrance and head over the world's busiest motor vehcile bridge, in the bike lane (of course), and up 9W.  We will stop at the Titanic Deli in Congers for Lunch.  After Lunch we loop the park and its 256-acre Lake.  We head home, riding through West Nyack to Tenafly and up Churhill Road to recross the GWB.  62 miles.  Meet at 9:00 AM and... more
