Thimble Island Bike/Cruise IV
Ah, Memorial Day Weekend is finally here and what better way to celebrate than to hit the back roads of coastal Connecticut. Our destination: Thimble Islands, one of the majestic wonders of the world, and only a heartbeat away from New Haven, where beforehand we'll breakfast at Clare's Cornercopia, a venerable culinary landmark in its own right feeding generations of hungry Yale undergraduates. (Those on a leaner diet can simply carb up at the nearby Dunkin' Donuts.) Some of the sights along the way include: the West Haven Lighthouse, a Victorian carousel, a defunct trolley rail trail line through a vast estuary, and of course a boat tour aboard the beloved Sea Mist, piloted by local history buff and old salt Captain Mike Infintino, who'll give you the lowdown on the one percenters who inhabit the lush mansions atop these tiny island outcroppings. To begin, we'll board the 7:02 AM Metro North for New Haven (bike permit required) , breakfast at 9 AM, and then buy lunch in Branford, where we'll board and dine al fresco while enjoying a 45-minute boat tour. (New this year: those who wish to ride a little more, and skip the tour, can quick spin five miles up the coast to Shell Beach.) On the return, we should arrive in New Haven in time for the 5:15 to New York. Some of us, though, may stay later for a bit of that notorious New Haven-style pizza, beer, and nightlife. It's all good, either way.
But do rsvp or sign up.
