Polar Bear Ride
The first ride of 2019!
Only runners and cyclists appreciate the peaceful uninebriated yawn of an early New Year's morning: Desolate streets, no gridlock, as quiet as a pin drop, and complete and utter tranquility. But, of course, the ruckus begins at 1PM with the Polar Bears bringing in the new year, on the beach at Coney Island. And we'll be joining them! And after, to warm us up, we'll make a sprint up to Brighton, with a visit to the St. Peterburg's Global Trade House, for some Russian Xmas shopping (which is still to come, a week after), and some new year's Russian broth (free-flowing carafes of vodka, or so they say) at the infamous Georgian restaurant, Primorski's. (Its $6.99 lunch special includes soup, entree, dessert, and coffee – the best deal of the new year!) From Yelp: “If you could see yourself on a post-Soviet cruise ship listening to cabaret and watching a disco ball glimmer, you will feel at home at Primorski.” But, alas, Primorski's is no more. So it is Tatiana's around the corner on the Boardwalk, with the same glitzy decor, just pricier. ($20 buffet.)
Meet up: City Hall, 10AM; Henry & Union 10:45 AM (outside on the benches of Mazzola Bakery, open they tell me on New Year's day, where you can relax with a coffee and fresh pastry while waiting) ETA @Coney Island: 12:30, so no dallying!. After lunch, though, an effortless train ride back or a slower ride on the return on Ocean Pkwy bike path to Prospect Park and then Manhattan.
Email the leader if you want to meet up with us along this route.
