Lost Synagogues of The Bronx
Building on the first in what can now officially be called the "Lost Synagogues Series" of rides (Gary Katz led the Lost Synagogues of Brooklyn with Dave Meltzer on March 23rd, 2014), ride with us from Manhattan to Da Bronx and back, seeing a prime number (17) of former synagogues.
We will head up the West Side and pause in Inwood, visiting two synagogues before riding over the University bridge into the Bronx where the remaining former synagogues are located. Most of these are functioning as churches or stores today, so we may be able to visit a few - but our goal will be to keep this a moderate paced ride. We will return a different way down the east side winding up at a fine kosher deli where we will order "take out" ahead of time and then enjoy an (optional) picnic lunch back at our starting point near central park.
Our list of sites has been compiled from the book "The Lost Synagogues of the Bronx and Queens" by Ellen Levitt. Bring snacks, drinks, money for lunch, a lock for your bike, and spare tube(s), pump, and tools.
Mileage: 30 relatively flat but there are some serious hills in the Bronx - a good opportunity to work on your hill skills - none are insurmountable
Ride Type: Moderate
Start Location: Columbus Circle
Leaders: Allan Friedman and Gary Katz
