Volunteers Needed!
It takes only 20 bucks to be a 5BBC member. It takes hard work to be a 5BBC volunteer. Which one are you? It takes more than 120 volunteers to make the Montauk Century the best event of its kind. Are you one of them? If you are, keep on reading.
What you will get
For starters, you'll get a 2010 Montauk Century volunteer t-shirt. You'll also be invited to the Montauk Century volunteer party where you'll meet the other movers and shakers who make the 5BBC the friendliest bike club in the city.
Maybe you'll get to ride the event too. Some of our volunteers help out because they want to donate their time to a non-profit organization that's dedicated to bicycling advocacy. (See our bylaws ) Other volunteers help out because they're attracted by the complementary ride that we offer. Either way is fine with us. It's your choice.
What can I do?
- You can do lots of things. See below for job descriptions.
- Some jobs require volunteers to be capable of riding a B-Pace or better after finishing their job in order to reach the finish line by 6:00 PM. A "B-Pace" is at least 13 mph. Jobs like that are flagged with the note "B-PACE OR BETTER REQUIRED".

Other Jobs
Besides volunteers for the jobs listed above, we need:
- Volunteers to drive SAG vans and cargo trucks
- Volunteers to paint the road markings
- Volunteers with advertising expertise
- Volunteers with relevant skills that we haven't even thought of
All volunteers who do ride on event day are expected to do so as riding marshals. As a riding marshal you should wear your volunteer t-shirt, carry a patch kit, pump and tire levers, and help less experienced riders who are having trouble fixing their own flats.
Are You Ready to Volunteer?
If you are, then send an email to the 5BBC's volunteer coordinator and tell us:
- Your name, email address and phone number (cell phone preferred)
- Which job you're interested in.
- Whether or not you want to cycle the route.
We'll get back to you and let you know if we still have an opening for the job you want. If we do, and if you want to ride, we'll then ask you to register online as a volunteer to confirm your commitment. Upon completion of your assignment, you will:
- Receive your bike and baggage (B&B) tags from your crew chief. Your B&B tags are your ticket to ride the tour.
- Receive a full refund of your online registration fee.
